CHAPTER 7

The Bible Truth

There is no mistaken that the Christian church came under a bombardment of pagan influence.  Many have assumed that the Christian religion has triumphed over the years; however, a close examination of history will prove that the Christian religion is an entirely different religion now than when the early apostles observed it.  The book of Jude tells us, “…and exhort you that you should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.”  (Jude 1:3).  It is here that Jude seems to be telling the Church to adhere to the same faith that the early apostles had.  Was Christmas a part of the apostolic faith?  As we have read Christmas was something that was gradually accepted into mainstream culture, which is the result of embracing so many pagan practices that are held as holy in the mainstream churches today.

Can we come to terms that man can make a certain day holy by just declaring it to be so?  God instructs His people in Deuteronomy:

“What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.”  Deu.12:32

Jesus also said in the gospel of Matthew:

"…Teaching them [Christian converts] to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you…”  Matt. 28:20

Did Jesus, the Son of the Living God, command Christians to observe His birth?  There is not a remote hint of Jesus commanding his disciples to observe His birth.  Is it in man’s best interest to conjure up ideas on how he is to worship God?  The Bible alone stands as the instruction book on how we are to worship and follow God.  In John’s gospel we read:

“God is a spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”  John 4:24

That brings us to this question.  What is truth?  About two thousand years ago this question was asked to the Creator of the universe by a Roman governor (John 18:38).  God’s Word tells us what truth is, spoken by the mouth of is Son, Jesus Christ:

“Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth.”  John 17:17

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life…” John 14:6

According to the Bible, Jesus Christ and His words define truth.  So if God’s Word is truth, then we must find Christmas in the Bible for it to be truth.  That leaves we Christians with this question.  If Jesus Christ is “…the truth…” then was He born on December 25th?  And if not, then why would God choose December 25th a day born out of a pagan religion that is not instructed in the Bible?  Many years ago king David was inspired by the Holy Spirit to write:

“Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.  Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; and I hate every false way.”  Psa. 119:127-128

Does God “…hate every false way”?  Apparently He inspired one of the greatest kings of Israel to write it.  So is there any truth in Christmas as we have just analyzed?  Is there Biblical truth that mankind should observe the birth of Christ without God’s authority by instituting it through pagan religions?  We have already discovered that Christmas is indeed a pagan celebration that has gradually blended itself into mainstream Christianity over many years and there is not a hint of proof that the early church observed this tradition.  In the following chapter we will discover how God feels about paganism.
