Stagger Not At
The Promises Of God
by Milford Bowen
We
have been taught that there are over 900 promises in God’s Word. When we
have a problem or a need do we remember to search the scriptures to find an
answer? Or do we just struggle through in our own strength? If we do find an
answer do we really believe the promise in the Word of God and walk out on
it? That’s what God wants us to do – to trust His Word and act accordingly.
Do you
remember the account of Abraham? He had no offspring even though God had
told he would be the father of many nations. He was an old man and Sara’s
womb was dead. “And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body
now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness
of Sara's womb” (Romans 4:19).
We go on to
read of his great believing in verses 20 and 21: “He staggered not at the
promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to
God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also
to perform” (verses 20 and 21). Abraham refuse to look at things from the
five-senses point of view. God’s Word and will came to pass in his life.
If we don’t
stagger at the promises of God, they will come to pass in our lives. God is
faithful to His Word.
Abraham was
fully persuaded that what God had promised He was able to perform. Are we
fully persuaded that God can bring to pass the promise we need in our lives
right now? We have to believe in the depths of our heart that the Word of
God is the will of God, and that He is not only willing but also able to
bring to pass what He has promised.
In this
world today so many people, even believers, make promises and fail to follow
through on them. We need to realize the example that portrays. Suppose I
tell you I’ll come to your house to help you paint on Saturday, and I don’t
show up, or even call to say I can’t make it. What would your response be to
other promises I might make? Would you be fully persuaded that I meant what
I said, not only in that area, but in other areas of my life? God kept His
promises. He was faithful to His Word. He’s our example and we should walk
in the light of His Word.
Back to the
promises of God – those are words we can consistently depend on. God’s words
in the scriptures are there to meet our need in any situation.
Are you full
of fear and need help to overcome it? Go to God’s Word and claim the promise
there for you. “But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall
be quiet from fear of evil” (Proverbs 1:33). “For God hath not given us the
spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (II Timothy
1:7).
Are you
seeking peace in your life? “And the peace of God, which passeth all
understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
(Philippians 4:7). “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as
the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither
let it be afraid.” (John 14:27).
Do you need
help in troubled times? “The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of
trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.” (Nahum 1:7). “But the
salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time
of trouble.” (Psalm 37:39).
So now we
know there are promises in God’s Word to help us. We search them out, but
then we must be fully persuaded that God is willing and able to perform that
which He has promised. We need to follow the example of the “father of many
nations” and stagger not at the promises of God. What a challenge! Rise up
and believe and walk in victory today, claiming God’s precious promises.
